It is odd among viruses in that it does not seek to convert the computer into a botnet, steal personal data, or anything that would be useful to the creator of the virus. Instead, it seems to be made to simply cause as much destruction as possible without regard for security or safety. Although we quarantined everyone infected with the virus as quickly as possible, twelve other people were infected with the virus in the first hour of it being released into the wild. Investigation has gone into the identity of the user, but has came to naught as he provided false information and accessed the site via a secure proxy server. The site's lease has already expired, preventing a live version of the virus to be captured, but the HTML document was provided to us by the ISP. It is confirmed that the virus was downloaded through a lesser-known security vulnerability in Windows that allowed Internet Explorer to be accessed even if it was not the default browser, and then installed the virus via one of the many unpatched flaws in Internet Explorer. It is confirmed that the HTML for the exploitation would have taken considerable skill in programming to implement. |
