mAc Chaos had a simple request for his friend and colleague, Milldawg. All the young defense lawyer had to do was win one little court case. However, as Milldawg found himself trapped in a growing web of betrayal and intrigue, he quickly discovered that there was nothing simple about this case at all.
To go more in depth... I wanted to get my friends into Ace Attorney, so I made a trial using them as the characters.
I'd like to thank Mimi Mika and ED for helping me with their own feedback until now, along with MLK for one of the character animations. I may have forgotten something but I'll comb through the trial later and make sure. I'd be interested in seeing what Henke, BBlader, Tap, Meph, Unas, Mimi, Ping, ED, Jean of mArc, Zeel, Blackrune, and other regulars around here have to say.
Enjoy!

Is this that 3000 frame investigation you've talked about on and off? So it's finally done, huh? I've got some stuff to do but I'll play it right after that.
I might not even have to do that, in which case I'll be done even faster.
Spoiler : zomg :
HOLY CRAP KRISTOPH PROMOTING MOUNTAIN DEW IS THE BEST THING EVER.
...What's with the names, though?

Yes, that's exactly correct. The purpose of the test is to test whether you have an understanding of the material, not if you've simply memorized it and can regurgitate it. In fact, I'm sure the reason he put the 'trick questions' on the test was in order to see who understood the material and was paying attention and who was simply memorizing facts without taking the time and effort to actually understand them.

Haha, you remembered. It takes me forever to get these things done. I don't know how Tap manages to crank out 4000 frames in like 3 days.
Spoiler : zomg :
They're all OCs, based off my friends. If that's what you meant by the character names. That way there's a hook for them to play even if they aren't necessarily interested in Ace Attorney. (And then maybe they'll want to play the real games.) If you were in it your character would be Blader or something.

I got a lot of inspiration from you guys. My philosophy when making something is to just take everything that I think is awesome and cram it together to make the PERFECT COMBINATION

Defendant's Lobby? Defendant lobby. - OMG 'TIS YOU! :O - *JAZP* Mountain Dew?! - "He knows all, sees all" Age? gender? Occupation? General facts? Come on! Same with Squaz's profile... - Ack! Evidence dump! Not all at once, please, one at a time. - If you could, re-do the violin and remove the thin white line surrounding it. - "Court will now be in session." --> "Court will begin soon" - Kristoph, Apollo, and Klavier in PW's courtroom... - Klavier seems kind of weird on The PW Prosecution bench... never mind, you can't fix that, so don't worry XD - Weird. We make note of his name before we know it? lolparadox. - "Words can't describe..." OKAY, seriously, we needs better profile descriptions... -.- - In the flashback, the sgould be black and white, too. - On Kaufer's profile, don't use his sprite, use his profile pic xD - LOL BADD... whats he looking at? Why's he looking at the defense? XD - Try making the floor plans better, using Dan's Floor plan guide. - Well... that was a rather obvious contradiction... - Well, I guess it's okay XD
Sorry, I'd review the rest but I can't. I must say, it's not amazing, but it's good. Put in more filler. All i'ma say. Don't just keep going straight to the point.

Why can't you review the rest?
lol, other people were saying I was being too long winded.
The difficulty shouldn't be that hard for an AA veteran. It's meant to ease in beginners, but the difficulty scales up as it goes along.
Yeah, I left pithy phrases in the profile instead since this isn't exactly an official AA case. If I was making a canon one then it would follow that guideline. Also, for evidence purposes, I wanted to be vague as to what exactly they represented, since if I started listing every single relevant detail I would either have to isolate the detail that you need to present (basically giving it away) or listing everything about them which would give you an encyclopedia. I suppose I'll change some of them though.
I do apologize for not reviewing the 2nd part of your case. I was quite busy with TCrackdown. That being said, I don't need to tell you what I think of Part 1 since I've already given my review.
I should play part 2 some time.

Yeah, it's fine. I saw how busy you were. I just ended up going with my instincts, and I had to stop working on it and release it sometime, imperfections and all, or nothing would ever get done.

I've just finished the first part, and damn... what a brilliant case this is. You sprung it on us by surprise just like Canuck did all those months ago. The dialogue was fantastic and well-scripted. It was packed full of humour and wit and was a perfect dramedy. I was a bit worried by the use of recycled sprites for all the characters, but it worked out really well in the end. The characters you chose to represent you and your friends are a perfect fit, and I didn't have any problems trying to distinguish them from their true selves. For example, Mildawg didn't feel like Apollo at all, which was fantastic!
Here's a mini-report for you.
Spoiler : :
- No need to put the prefix "Description" in the evidence descriptions. - Time and location stamps are great except for the ordinal number (th) which should be omitted. - JFA music?! Well, I guess the Lobby theme is one of the few good tracks. - Also: No prologue. - Kristoph and Mountain Dew?! - Huh, Kristoph's head shake sprite worked for the first time in... well, it's never worked before! - Ooh, a mini-investigation. ^^ - No instantaneous text? Correct hex colours? Merged frames? ZOMG! - The frame before "Profile of Squaz" extends the textbox to four lines. - Profiles are added to the Court-Record without bringing them to the attention of the player. - Hmm... you need to add a bit more dialogue to the evidence added to the Court Record. Without explaining what was added, it feels as if you've rushed it. It's hard to explain... - PW style backgrounds? *gulp* - mAc will be the killer. Kristoph plays the violin, so he took it! - Nice greyscale flashbacks. - Very nice custom graphics. =) - "Crime scene map added to the Court Record." Capitalise scene and map. - And again with the Floor Plans. - The testimony title is great, but it needs to be pushed down onto the second line, if that makes any sense... - I'll forgive you... for now for the use of JFA CE music. - Change: "Yes, your Honor." to "Yes, Your Honor." - And once more with the "Broken shards". Capitalisation is your friend here! - There's been a good consistent use of sound effects as well as shake effects. I don't recall seeing any flash effects so far though... - Huh, Badd's mini-sprites actually look pretty good on the stand in the "Courtroom mutter" .gifs. - Capitalisation! - Oldbag rant! <3 - One of the frames in it stretches the textbox to four lines. - I haven't seen much use of the "Whoops" SFX... - When presenting the Floor Plans, you've forgotten the "Take That!". - When it goes back to asking for proof about the vase breaking, Klavier shows up on the co-council bench. - I really love how you've animated the maps. I'm going to have to steal that idea for future episodes. - Before Apollo says: "He's a liar, your Honor!", Klavier shows up on the defense's bench. - When Lavaranth goes mad, the textbox is pushed to the right. - "We know the door had to be locked at some point since it was locked when Styles came onto the scene." Four lines. -

Finished part 1. I must say, it's quite interesting.
Spoiler : :
I liked the locked door/key-logic. Maybe because it somewhat's reminds me of my own case? With people trying to just slip by the little detail that the room should have been locked. xD
Also, that "choice" made me laugh. I picked "Hell no", obviously. And "THERE IS NO DOOR" just because I can. And for some reason I despaired at that last present for quite a while, you really had me think I had to bring the violin into it somehow. (and the fact that it's the only piece that leads to a different path of failure shows that you were expecting people to think that. Well gratz, one point to you. The rest was easy though. At least this way I got to see a cool game over sequence with the lawyer becoming all angsty.)
So far it's quite good. Definitely entertaining enough to keep playing. I don't see why people would complain about the pacing, it's exactly right in my opinion. Enough to toss in some funny moments, but also not too stretched.
Thanks for the report, Tap! I'm making the changes. Or at least the changes I can make without ruining people's progress. (I've found that as long as you don't change the number of frames in your trial, you can edit the trial and save it without disrupting people's own save markers. Apparently the game uses the frame number to determine where the player last left off. So if you add frames, it throws them off. But if you change frames that already exist, it doesn't change the player's placement.)
Heheh, Blackrune, that last part caught a lot of people.
I'm surprised you guys didn't get caught on:
Spoiler : Kaufer :
The part where you have to prove the door was locked. Everyone else who played it before got stuck on that for a while. I guess you guys are more used to these kinds of things though.

Heh, stuck on part 2. Stupid technology, who'd make something that complicated? ^^"
Spoiler : :
But searching around a mansion, a missing key and strange combination to figure out, feels sorta familiar to me if you catch my drift. ... So this is how it must have felt from the player's detective, now please tell me where I need to go after I pressed those buttons behind the picture. Something unlocked... but wheeeeere!? D:
Edit: Nevermind, found it. Edit2: Ok what the hell? xD I'm too sleepy right now to figure something like this out. Going to continue tomorrow.

Thanks for the feedback, Tap! What kind of difference did you feel between the characters, like Milldawg and Apollo?
And I laughed when I saw you call it a "dramedy." I never heard that term before. Awesome.
Make sure to play Part 2! It's a step up from Part 1.
Also, re: overflowing text. Argh! It doesn't overflow for me. I think it's related to your monitor size and resolution. It makes it kind of hard to make sure it always fits.
