I've seen this puzzle quite often, but not this variation xD

Two questions:
1) Does a monk take the vaccine only if he's sure he's infected?
2) After a monk uses a vaccine to cure himself, is it possible to become re-infected?

Why am I reminded of Liar Game all of a sudden...?

The vaccines don't cure the illness. They simply prevent it from spreading any further than it already has. (the only purpose of that statement is to explain why the disease doesn't keep spreading. There's no relevance to the actual riddle beyond that.)

But if the disease is incurable and it kills in 1-2 hours, why does it take 14 days for anyone to die o.O

Because you only die once you are 100% sure that you're infected. (a strange disease indeed)
And the monks can't see their own forehead. Hue hue hue

Let's take it from the perspective of one of the monks. Pretend that he has the disease. That makes one. When the monk goes to breakfast, lunch, or dinner, he will see some people that have the disease. However, this cannot apply to him, for he does not know he has the disease.

...Damn, I just looked up the answer. It's 14, BTW.
:awesome:

So you looked it up.
That's rather interesting, because that answer is incorrect. :P

Well you could use the shotgun method.... or you could actually explain why.
The part about them seeing the other monks at breakfast/lunch/dinner isn't a bad beginning. :P

What about 1000 divided by 14=71?

All those guesses are wrong. (they'd lack an explanation anyway)

Dangit, my friend told me he thought the answer was 49, but didn't give a reason. He's too shy to post here, so I really dunno.

Okay. I notice that Gav posted 14 monks after 14 days. When that was wrong, he said 114, and then 4, and 1000.

He states that he looked it up. I don't know what he looked up, but I don't really care. I think he was off by a lot.
Because of 1000 monks, 14 seems a bit small. 1000 is a multiplication of 10, So I am going to make a blind/ever so slightly informed guess.

I think that the answer is 140 monks.

41, 42, or 43.

If those 3 are wrong, I'll actually think about it :P

So when Gav posts random numbers, you tell him he's wrong. When I post random numbers, you say I have to explain why :awesome:

Anyway, since I've basically heard this riddle before, I'll let someone else try to solve it~
