Doki Doki Magical Guardians
A Magical Girl RP
GM'd by: NN and Kwando
Most of this story takes place on the planet Earth, though one quite different from our own. Technological innovations in the 21st and 22nd centuries allowed for humans, regardless of gender, to wield abilities that past generations would have called “magic”, as well as the discovery of people that, likely due to some sort of evolutionary benefit, were essentially the real deal. Despite initial arms races and conflicts, eventually Earth’s countries managed to unite together as one. However, discoveries of other planets with equally sophisticated technology and space travel caused tensions to build, the people of Earth continually wary of an attack from aliens- a concept that had mostly been ridiculed centuries prior. For your average person on Earth however, life is relatively peaceful, and people live contented lives.
However, our story doesn’t begin on Earth. It begins on the planet of Grovea. A planet that had advocated pacifism outside emergency circumstances, had a rich supply of beautiful trees of various kinds, and had been, on a whole, a pleasant place to live. The past tense I’ve used is quite important in this case.
Fire. There was so much fire. The trees had been reduced to kindling, and those that hadn’t were ablaze. King Oak couldn’t even imagine how many casualties there’d been. Hundreds of people? Thousands? The fact that he didn’t know terrified him; the fact that he didn’t even want to know terrified him even more.
Eventually, four people had arrived at the palace. The teenage girl stood out among them, for various reasons, and she raised a hand- a clear non-verbal gesture that she would take care of things. The king pleaded with her, trying to make her see reason, but nothing got through. After finding out that what they had been looking for and shattered to an unknown planet, the girl murdered him. One of the only true comforts to be found was that his death was instant.
However, as though demonstrating that even great despair-inducing acts can bring about new hope, seeing the murder of his king motivated Pine to action. His appearance was akin to an owl on Earth, but the creature had two key quirks- whether they were from the planet’s magical ambiance or somehow a product of evolution, nobody can say. These quirks were that he could speak any language he had previously heard and (more important to this part of the story), he could teleport. And he knew exactly where to go.
Outside his planet, the planet Earth may potentially have had the greatest collection of magical energy of any inhabited world, even if it was primarily artificially generated. In addition, he’d heard that even the teenagers of Earth could be quite skilled at magical combat, and therefore were his best hope at defeating the opposing menace, collecting the Golden Sapphire shards, and saving, chances were, the entire universe.
So! Welcome to this attempt at a MG RP. I’ll attempt to answer many of your likely questions below via…
HYPOTHETICAL FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS!
So, what exactly is the story here?
Well, as my prententious intro hopefully made clear, you will be defending the Earth from baddies using magical (or pseudo-magical) powers and collecting the MacGuffin known as the Golden Sapphire. More information on exactly who the baddies are (and how many) and the nature of the Golden Sapphire will become available to you as we go along.
How many characters can I have?
That will likely be dependent on how many users join and up to our judgment. However it’d be safest to presume 1 until it is otherwise announced.
How does combat work?
Essentially the same as any other fighting RPG. The only real difference is that, as noted in the app, you can choose whether to have natural magic and a magical girl weapon, or use magitech and have a weapon as a sort of conduit. It’s worth noting that natural magic is slightly more versatile, but will likely do less weapon damage. The inverse is true with magitech users. There may be enemies down the line that can use both for plot reasons, and GMs will try their best to keep such fights balanced and fair.
Is there anything to do other than plot-stuff?
Actually, there is! There will be times when the enemy is not attacking, and while you can spend your time trying to find leads for our MacGuffin, in most cases you will not be obligated to. There will be various missions and events that you can go to. Some will involve some form of combat/activity you need to complete. You also will have break time to interact with other characters, the equivalent of Free Time in Dangan Ronpa.
Is there any reason to engage in these activities? And what do you mean by “most cases”?
The primary bonus in engaging in non-combat actions and activities is that you often will be rewarded with power increases. And it’s likely that such will be necessary down the line. And in interest of the plot not totally stagnating, the villains will be collecting shards of the MacGuffin as well, just (often) off-screen. Hence if the villains reach a point where they are close to completing their goal, or are after an easily-accessible piece of the MacGuffin you will be informed and can hopefully spring into action! Need to keep the plot moving, you know?
Can my character die?
Well as the intro above implies, the villains have no problem killing characters if they find it necessary or appropriate. So it’s safe to assume that the option is on the table. However, it’s worth emphasizing that death is not always the end! So while you should certainly try your best to not die, it’s worth keeping that in mind.
Hey, I have a question that's not on this list?
Come to me or kwando with the question and we’ll do the best we can to answer it, if it would not somehow spoil the person asking the question about something. But otherwise I welcome queries and asking for clarification on something, even this very intro!
Can I be a magical boy?
Despite this being a "magical girl" RP, you can have magical abilities regardless of gender, as the app implies! Feel free to app with whichever gender you'd like
So what exactly is the deal with magical weapons? Some things here seem to imply that you only get a weapon if you choose magitech, and other parts indicate that you get one either way?
In essence, you can have a weapon if you go pure magic and it is just weaker. The confusion is due to imprecise wording on my part- in essence the difference between a magical weapon and a magitech weapon is that the magitech weapon acts as a conduit for the magical energy- it acts akin to an Intelligent Device from Nanoha converting and creating magical energy for attacks. Such conduits allow for more powerful attacks but also create a fresh weak-point, in that they can be put out of commission, thereby rendering the user temporarily in peril.
Hopefully that makes sense. For clarity I'll adjust the app so that it's clear that the magitech weapon is dual-functioning as a conduit.
With that out of the way, here’s the app to PM to us (portions can be redacted on request).
